Emerald is a birthstone for May.
Since Ancient Egyptian times (around 3500BC) emeralds have been linked to fertility, immortality and eternal spring. The name is derived from the Greek "Smaragdos", meaning green gem.
Inclusions are a characteristic of emeralds and are often referred to as “la jardin” (Garden). These do not devalue the gem as long as the colour and transparency is not spolit.
Large gemstones are rare and can often exceed the prices of the finest diamonds.
Perhaps some of the most famous emeralds ever sold are those belonging to Elizabeth Taylor and designed by BVLGARI, which sold in 2011 for over $6 million.
