Sapphire is a birthstone for September.
Traditionally the Sapphire symbolizes nobility, truth, sincerity and faithfulness. For many centuries Sapphire has also been associated with romance and royalty.
Sapphires aren’t only blue in colour, although the word sapphire is suggestive of blue; all others have the prefix of their colour i.e pink sapphire, green sapphire or yellow sapphire. Interestingly, the only colour sapphire doesn’t come in is red (see ruby). Padparadscha sapphire is a special orange/pink in colour, and is found in Sri Lanka - the name means the “lotus flower”.
Perhaps the most famous sapphire ring is the one now worn by the Duchess of Cambridge, first given by Prince Charles to Lady Diana as her engagement ring.
